서문 Introduction

After encountering news about a major fire last year, it brought back memories for me. When I was in the military, I often had to respond to wildfires in the area where I served. As an ordinary soldier, I had to face flames reaching 2 to 3 meters high armed with just a shovel. Naturally, a single shovel couldn’t suppress the fire, and it took large helicopters to finally contain it. Amidst the towering flames, I felt fear and experienced powerlessness for the first time in my life. Recently, I feel like I’m living with a similar sense of powerlessness. My existence in a seemingly unimprovable world parallels the image of me, holding a shovel in front of an immense fire, feeling helpless and merely watching.
In Korea, People use the word ‘火魔Hwama(fire devil)’ to depict massive fires. It seems very human to anthropomorphize natural disasters and portray them as embodiments of evil. (I also find it quite odd and amusing how we name hurricanes.) Even when expressing anger, word ‘火Hwa’ (fire) was used in the
past. Related terms like ‘鬱火Woolhwa’(rage) or ‘火病Hwabyung’ (hypochondria) all have intriguing connections to fire(火). Given my previous work on a kind of heroic saga, it made me contemplate the idea of a hero defeating the fire demon. The story of this hero serves as both a wish for world peace and a better future and a personal aspiration to overcome my own inner turmoil.
Best regards,

Revisiting the Extinguished Fire
Konno Yuki
Fire isn’t a living organism, but it symbolizes a kind of vitality. Passion, fervor, diligence. If you translate these English words into Korean, they all contain the word ‘열’, which means heat. Many of us have probably seen scenes in comics or animations where fire blazes when someone exudes artificial strength or ambition. However, in the recent trend of ‘Bulmung’ or fire-gazing, we don’t necessarily draw passion from the burning flames. Instead of continuously igniting our passion by gazing at the fire, we find solace in the tranquility of mind. It’s peculiar upon reflection. Despite being depicted as an object bursting with energy, we often feel drained or deprived of strength when facing fire. A story involving Hansaem Kim exemplifies this. Faced with a forest fire during his military service, he felt overwhelmed and powerless. For Hansaem Kim, rather than passion or fervor, fire brought forth ‘Burnout.’ So, does this ‘Bulmung’ really cause neither burnout nor passion?
The idea of seeing a fire that overwhelms or mesmerizes is possible because it’s a fire. A fire, though it can grow, does not move around. In front of an actual fire, humans can’t really become one with it; they can only stare at it quietly. Unlike protagonists in comics or animations who become the fire itself, a person facing a fire cannot grow alongside it. No matter how much passion one might have while looking at the fire, they never throw themselves into it. Apart from the choice to extinguish the fire, we have no option but to either gaze at it or watch it. Therefore, the fire is difficult to become a passion in front of us, not due to its size or the scale of its spread becoming a part of my passion, but because of the fact that we can only observe it from a distance. This doesn’t mean that the fire lacks energy entirely. Rather, in wildfires or blazes, the fire holds such a strong force that it can steal away the vitality of the viewer. A fire that prevents approach or contact signifies its untouchable presence to humans. Even spacing out is nothing but human powerlessness in front of a wildfire.
In the exhibition titled 《Fire Devil》 by artist Hansaem Kim, the true color of ‘Fire Devil’ is not menacing. For those who came to see this exhibition titled ‘The Fire Fiend,’ the overwhelming or mind-boggling power is faint within the exhibition space. Quietly placed in the exhibition space are objects that were once ‘Fire Devil’. One of the reasons they are referred to as ‘once’ is because the dynamic vigor of blazing flames has now dissipated, taking on a solid form, displayed in parts rather than as a whole. Not only are pixelated pictures embedded in the fragmented body, but there is a reason behind the writings or drawings that resemble scribbles around them. Seeing the formless body with only the head, hands, and feet left gives a glimpse of the victor’s trivial desire who overcame the ‘The Fire Fiend.’ The evidence of victory lies not in absence but in hard facts, specifically in presenting the severed heads, hands, and feet to justify. The narrative of facing and conquering adversity is commemorated not as an overall existence or absence, but solely as fragments.
Perhaps what the artist himself most comprehended and wanted wasn’t the sudden appearance of a fiery demon encountered face to face, but rather the fiery demon that stirred within, causing inner turmoil during years of grappling with artistic pursuits. What one can discover in the exhibition isn’t just the size of the fiery demon but rather fragments of the body serving as trophies, representing the artist’s contemplation and journey of overcoming. The fiery demon harbored within has now emerged outwardly, shaped almost as if soothing and consoling, as it gently forms me. This fiery demon, relentless in its potential for growth, at risk of burnout from its sheer magnitude, has now become a tangible artifact with a distinct form. Now, we stand at a distance, akin to standing before a fire. Crafted from aluminum, this objet d’art has lost the dynamism of flames; instead, it was handcrafted as if sculpting the artist’s inner self. The painstakingly created pixel art follows a similar narrative, not just crafted with care but engraved with messages sent by the artist to oneself: ‘make sure that you’ve extinguished fire completely.
The scribble-like word etched onto the object feels akin to a tender phrase someone might affectionately offer on a bandage or cast. The extinguished and hardened fire is displayed partially. It’s the act of bringing forth one’s own helplessness and observing it from afar. Through this practice, convincing oneself or convincing someone else becomes a way of returning the energy stolen by fire and flames back to oneself. This solid form, placed in the exhibition like a trophy willingly looked upon, reflects the artist’s determination. Thinking about it, a trophy not only symbolizes triumph over hardship but also cherishes its narrative, experiences, and memories. The once blazing fire has been extinguished. The artist’s resolve is firmly embedded in this form. While gazing at the fire, letting go of one’s thoughts, that focus might have turned into positive energy for the artist, returning once again.
